Goodwin House Executive Karen Skeens Elected to Senior Services of Alexandria Board of Directors
July 30, 2018 – Alexandria, Va. – Karen Skeens, Executive Director of Goodwin House at Home (GHAH), an innovative Life Care program operated by Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI), has been elected to the Board of Directors of Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA).
Since its inception in 1968, SSA has served as a life-sustaining connection for seniors in the Alexandria community. SSA’s programs and services have grown to help fill the “gap” when older residents have nowhere else to turn. Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) is a non-profit organization that has as its mission, “to foster independence and self-sufficiency, enabling seniors within the City of Alexandria to age with dignity.” SSA operates the Meals on Wheels delivery program and DOT transportation reservations for the City, presents educational programs through various events, a speaker series, and a monthly cable television production, Senior Living in Alexandria. SSA and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the AniMeals on Wheels program, providing food for pets of low-income seniors. SSA’s Friendly Visitor Program matches volunteers with seniors for weekly visits, enhancing connections to the community, and SSA’s Silver Service Card program provides local seniors with discounts at select stores and restaurants.
Goodwin House at Home is the first program of its kind in Northern Virginia and the second approved in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With a range of member benefits coordinated by a professional Member Services Facilitator and flexible financial plans, GHAH provides affordable, high-quality services to adults age 55 and above who want to live out their lives in the comfort of their own homes with the assurance of guaranteed care as they age, whatever their needs.
Skeen’s career includes over 20 years in the newspaper industry in sales, marketing, customer service, product development, and leadership positions. In 2001, she became the Director of Development for a retirement community in Blacksburg, Va., and discovered a passion for serving older adults. Skeens relocated to Northern Virginia in 2004 where she continued her work with seniors at a continuing care retirement community, a home health agency, and a hospice provider prior to joining GHI in 2008. She served as Marketing Director of Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads until being promoted to her current position as Executive Director of Goodwin House at Home in 2013.
