Expansion and Innovation
Over the years, GHI has maintained a discipline of continually re-investing in its communities, updating indoor and outdoor common areas, apartments, amenities, gardens and dining venues as well as programming and activities. We also have expanded our services to include health care, memory support, palliative care and hospice.
In 1998, we created Goodwin House Palliative Care and Hospice to provide this type of care to our residents. We later expanded the program, and today, our highly-skilled professionals provide palliative care and hospice outside of our residential communities and directly in homes and other living environments throughout Northern Virginia.
In 2014, GHI launched yet another innovative service for older adults – Goodwin House at Home (GHAH). Modeled after the continuing care concept in retirement communities, this unique program bundles an array of services and supports which can be provided to members wherever they call home. This unique program allows older adults to age in place – in their homes – safely and comfortably. Available to individuals and couples age 55, GHAH is the first program of its type to open in Virginia.
The latest GHI innovation is the Small House Health Care Center on our Goodwin House Alexandria campus. The largest of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic, this 80,000 square foot health care facility differs from the traditional institutional medical care environment the moment you ring the front doorbell with many distinctive features:
- Common areas similar to family rooms for relaxation and family visits
- Shared dining room table where residents can order their preferred meal ahead of time
- Home-style kitchen where meals are freshly prepared by staff
- Secure areas for medication in each resident’s room rather than industrial carts stationed in hallways with resident medications
We invite you to visit our communities today to experience the Goodwin House mission and spirit of innovation, and meet the residents who call Goodwin House Alexandria and Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads “home”.
