Dementia Friendly Alexandria Efforts Featured on NBC4 News

Dementia Friendly Efforts Gain Traction

Earlier this year, we shared news that Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI) hosted summits that brought together local community partners to discuss the Dementia Friendly America (DFA) movement and how we might bring it to the Northern Virginia region. As a direct result of those summits, two teams have organized themselves and established Dementia Friendly Alexandria and Dementia Friendly Arlington.

This week, these efforts were featured in local news.

NBC4’s Northern Virginia Bureau Chief Julie Carey shares that Alexandria is the fifth community in Virginia to receive the official “Dementia Friendly” designation. Carey explains how this effort helps those living with dementia — both those with the diagnosis and their loved ones who provide care for them.

Dementia Friendly America strives to engage communities in following guidelines and establishing practices that help local businesses, first responders and everyday citizens to recognize and support persons with dementia.

The efforts in Alexandria and Arlington are just the beginning. GHI is building on these successes and expanding our partnerships to help more local communities receive the Dementia Friendly designation. We plan to expand into Fairfax County later this year.
