Goodwin House at Home
Karen Skeens is Executive Director of Goodwin House at Home (GHAH), a program that provides independent older adults the opportunity to live out their lives in the comfort of their own homes with the assurance of guaranteed care as they age, whatever their needs. GHAH is the first program of its kind in Northern Virginia and the second approved in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With a range of member benefits coordinated by a professional Member Services Facilitator, and with flexible financial plans, Goodwin House at Home provides affordable, high-quality services to adults age 55 and above.
Under Karen’s enthusiastic leadership, GHAH has exceeded its original membership goals, reaching 100 members since its founding in 2014, and continues to grow. She is a passionate advocate for older adults, often heard explaining to others the importance of supporting seniors in choosing to remain at home as they age—it’s “Your home. Your life. Your choice.”
Karen maintains an ongoing interest in progressive and innovative “at home” services to ensure that best practices are incorporated to benefit GHAH members. She is excited by the role technology will play in assisting GHAH members to maintain independence, social interaction, and the ability to communicate easily with family, friends, and health care providers.
Karen’s career includes over 20 years in the newspaper industry in sales, marketing, customer service, product development, and leadership positions. In 2001, she became the Director of Development for a retirement community in Blacksburg, VA and discovered a passion for serving older adults. Karen relocated to Northern Virginia in 2004 where she continued her work with seniors at a continuing care retirement community, a home health agency, and a hospice provider prior to joining GHI in 2008. She served as Marketing Director of Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads until promotion to her current position in 2013.
Karen holds a B.S. degree in management and marketing from Radford University.
