Richard T. Carter

Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Treasurer

Richard Carter, Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Treasurer, joined Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI) in 2009. With broad experience and knowledge, he keeps GHI on a sound financial basis as it grows and expands in exciting new directions.  Richard is also a director of the Virginia Senior Care Group, which provides insurance services to a network of nonprofit, Virginia continuing care retirement communities, including GHI.

Richard strongly advocates transparency of financial operations.  He is recognized for the clarity of his presentations and his ability to explain complex financial matters in terms comprehensible to non-financial experts; and he presents programs on senior living finances at national conferences such as those sponsored by Ziegler Senior Living and LeadingAge.  Richard meets regularly with the Resident Finance Committee of each house; in addition, he explains to all residents the draft annual budget and the financial implications of major new initiatives, and then invites resident input.

Before joining GHI, Richard served as the Chief Financial Officer of Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association, Inc. where he managed a billion-dollar budget (2002 to 2008), a Partner with Tatum CFO Partners, LLP (2000 to 2002), a Senior Manager of Arthur Andersen LLP (1996 to 2000), Chief Financial Officer of Ameribanc Savings Bank (1986 to 1995), and a Manager of Arthur Andersen & Co. (1977 to 1986).

Richard is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Institute of Public Accountants; and he holds a B.S. in Commerce from the University of Virginia.
