Goodwin House Incorporated Selects Senior Living and Health Care Executive Xan Smith as New Chief Financial Officer

Selection Follows National Search to Replace Retiring CFO Richard T. Carter

Alexandria, VA – Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI) is pleased to announce the selection of Xan Smith as the next Chief Financial Officer to succeed Richard T. Carter, who is retiring after 12 years of extraordinary service. Carter has led GHI to a place of significant financial strength, as reflected in its consistently strong Fitch ratings and solid mission growth and expansion.

Following interviews that included staff leadership, Board Trustees and resident input, Smith was selected after a six-month national search. The search focused on selecting an executive dedicated to the Goodwin House mission of supporting, honoring and uplifting the lives of older adults and the people who care for them, while furthering the organization’s ability to sustainably grow its mission and serve more older adults. He will begin his new role on August 30, 2021.

“We are very excited to welcome Xan and his family to our Goodwin House family, as he is exactly the mission oriented, diversity minded, seasoned financial executive we were seeking,” said Rob Liebreich, GHI President and CEO. “His combined experience working with senior living and health care organizations, along with one of the leading capital firms serving our field, will provide Goodwin House with exceptional financial leadership as we grow our mission.”

“I am honored and excited to serve Goodwin House Incorporated,” said Smith. “The organization has a wonderful reputation of living its mission and doing so with a deep commitment to financial stewardship.”

Smith brings more than two decades of experience in senior living, managed care and investment banking to GHI. He is currently the President and CEO of Global Connections to Employment, a Division of Lakeview Center, Inc. in Pensacola, Fla., which is a multi-state nonprofit dedicated to cultivating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

He has served as Chief Financial Officer for two well-respected senior living organizations,

Moorings Park in Naples, Fla., and Blue Skies of Texas in San Antonio, Tx. At Moorings Park, Smith was responsible for all financial related events and transactions for five 501(c)(3) corporations and securing funding for expansions projects. His additional responsibilities included management of the information technology and central purchasing departments. At Blue Skies of Texas, Smith was responsible for all financial events and transactions for seven 501(c)(3) corporations. He also led the strategy and funding for a $150 million expansion and repositioning project, among other growth initiatives.

Smith held the role of senior vice president of Herbert J. Sims & Company, where he served as lead investment banker on tax-exempt financings across the Southwest U.S. and facilitated financing for all types of senior living and health care organizations.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management with an emphasis in Accounting/Finance from Wittenberg University. He has served on numerous state-level nonprofit boards of health care and children’s services organizations. Smith currently serves as the Board Treasurer of Covenant Care, the largest nonprofit provider of care services along the Florida Panhandle and south Alabama. Covenant Care supports more than 13,000 people annually with home health, home care, memory care, palliative care and hospice and other services.

“As we prepare for this CFO transition from Richard Carter to Xan Smith, I want to express deep gratitude to Richard for his heartfelt dedication to the mission of Goodwin House,” said Liebreich. “Richard’s contributions to the organization’s ability to grow and innovate are evident in all areas of service, from our Life Plan Communities to our services that support older adults in their homes and across the National Capital Region.”
