Goodwin House Health Care Centers Make U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Nursing Homes” List

Alexandria, VA – On Tuesday, November 9. 2021, U.S. News & World Report released their annual “Best Nursing Homes” list for 2020-21. Both Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads (GHBC) and Goodwin House Alexandria (GHA) are among those listed, and both received the highest ratings.

GHA and GHBC are Life Plan Communities that offer the full continuum of care, and the Health Care Centers at each campus are licensed and evaluated as nursing homes. At both health care centers, Goodwin House provides long-term care and short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitation to residents.

“We are deeply grateful to our staff who provide the highest quality care and service to the residents in our health care centers,” said Goodwin House Chief Operating Officer Linda Lateana. “This rating reflects their commitment to the Goodwin House mission, a commitment that endured and strengthened during the challenging times presented by the pandemic.”

To develop the “Best Nursing Homes” list, U.S. News reviewed more than 26,000 short-term and long-term nursing care centers throughout the country, covering every state and nearly 100 metropolitan areas. Out of all those evaluated, 2,714 centers received the “Best Nursing Home” distinction.

Since 2009, U.S. News has provided this service, relying on their own evaluation of data provided by the federal government including data collected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS). CMS inspectors visit and assess nursing care centers annually to ensure the centers are following the federal standards. Through their own careful review of these assessments, U.S. News provides this list to serve as a resource for anyone who might be searching for this specialized care.

According to their website, this year’s ratings were impacted by additional standards for patient safety, including a minimum threshold for COVID-19 vaccination rate among staff. Nursing homes with a staff COVID-19 vaccination rate below 75% staff would not receive the highest rating. For the 2020-21 listings, GHA and GHBC each received the “High-Performing” rating in both the Short-Term Rehabilitation category and Long-Term Care category.

“Even before we put a mandate in place, greater than 90 percent of Goodwin House staff had voluntarily taken part in our vaccine clinics,” stated Karen Doyle, associate executive director of GHBC. “This is just one of the many ways our staff have shown commitment to the health and safety of residents and colleagues throughout the pandemic. We are grateful to see this commitment recognized and honored by the U.S. News & World Report.”
