The team at The View at Alexandria exemplified Goodwin Living’s spirit by their response to SSA’s request for help after the devastating fire that destroyed the building which housed Jeffery’s Catering, the City’s meals on wheels provider. Their leadership team responded to SSA’s call for help immediately, providing fresh meals within 24 hours. They made it possible for us to continue delivering to homebound seniors until Jeffery’s restored operations about two weeks later. Without their exceptional support, the City would have been faced with a real crisis.

In summary, Goodwin Living represents the best about Alexandria. They are a caring community, always ready to step up when needed, and looking for ways to give back to improve the lives of our older adults.

We had been on an adventure in search of the best fit CCRC we could find. We sampled the dining at each stop-over, along with the various offerings
that are fairly standard in a CARF assessed CCRC. Of the approximately 27 locations that we visited, hands down in every respect, GHA was and is rated as number one above all others we observed.

The most standout differentiator at GHA that drew our attention was the high quality of leadership and the focus on resident quality of life. Sterling personifies that outstanding leadership. He has inculcated among those he leads. His attention to detail and concern for quality among his subordinate leaders enables them to deliver high level performance and know that what they do matters to so many. Because of Sterling, his team consistently delivers results that are above and beyond all expectations.

The dining atmosphere is always inviting, the serving staff courteous and attentive. Plus the six dining venues are always neat, clean and orderly, a sure sign that the right people are paying attention. The menu choices are unmatched in quality, availability, freshness and variety. Thank you for all that you do.

After moving in, I started walking the floors late in the evening most nights when I didn’t have a theater ticket. I enjoyed the walks, listening to my music, frequently singing along in the deserted halls. A typical walk: floors 6-1, twice each, and G, 4 times, for a total of 16 floors averaging 40 minutes per walk.

Sometime in 2021, I ceased walking due to worsening lower back pain. In the fall of 2022, I was diagnosed with multi-level degenerating disks and moderately severe arthritis in my spine. In December 2022 I began physical therapy with Lia in Goodwin Rehabilitation here at The View Alexandria, and in March 2022 I started treatment at the National Spine & Pain Center office in Alexandria.

Lia recently suggested I might be able to resume my walks using a walking stick. Tonight for the first time, I walked with my nifty new stick and my music. Yippee skippee! Tonight’s walk: floors 6-1, once each, and G, twice, for a total of 8 floors. 40 minutes.

Since At Home in Alexandria (AHA) began its operations in 2011, our organization has enjoyed many collaborations with Goodwin Living. Most notably, we've had a strong collaboration with Goodwin Living At Home for ten years. Our two organizations have created and co-hosted many educational events together - and Goodwin Living has always been generous in providing space and administrative support (not to mention food and beverage help) for events we have hosted together.

AHA is part of the Dementia Friendly Alexandria action team and we are grateful to Goodwin Living for stepping up to lead this effort from the beginning. That program is committed to making our Alexandria community a safe and supportive place for those living with dementia. For a number of years my husband and I contemplated a move to Goodwin Living. I prayed regularly for a positive outcome and surrendered to God’s will in the matter. Finally, early this year we received a call from Shannon Bishop. We took the apartment offered and moved in on May 25, 2017. Two months later we were offered our heart’s desire, the Rosslyn. I know God led us through all of the work involved in selling our home and moving in (twice)! Our residence here is a demonstration of God’s work in our lives and God’s love for us. There is a wonderful old Protestant Hymn entitled "Great is Thy Faithfulness." While all the words may not be appropriate, the word, "faithful" is perhaps one that resonates with most residents. Goodwin Living has made us a promise that it never has, nor will it ever ask a resident to leave because of running out of funds. These words became a living reality to me when I found myself out of funds. The Foundation helped me re-organize my debts, and with my remaining limited income, feel less guilty about the fact that I could not continue to support others or organizations at the level I had in the past. Helping me with my financial issues while preserving my dignity was a wonderful experience.

Few things can be counted on not to change, and one of those things is the Foundation's support for residents. It's a wonderful feeling knowing Goodwin Living will be faithful to its pledge, and will continue to support residents collectively and individually. Because we understand this, maybe it's the reason so many of us participate and try to "give back" in every way we can, to contribute to the quality of life at Goodwin Living.
