Goodwin House CPE Program A Ministry of Mutuality
The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program is a professional theological training program that helps students from all faith traditions learn pastoral skills and develop genuine pastoral relationships with older adults in a supervised clinical setting.
Thanks to the financial support of the Goodwin House Foundation, Goodwin House can offer this unique and meaningful training, which benefits the students, residents and the communities where the students ultimately serve.
In January 2006, the Goodwin House Clinical Pastoral Education Program received full accreditation from the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, making the Goodwin House CPE Program one of only about 350 accredited centers in the United States, most of which are hospitals.
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students have the opportunity to learn in two unique communities that value older adults and provide compassionate services to them. Over 1,000 residents live at Goodwin House Alexandria (GHA) and Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads (GHBC). Almost 70% live independently in their own apartments, while 32% receive support in assisted living or full nursing care. All are served by approximately 700 employees from over 67 countries.
This milieu provides a wide range of opportunity for learning about mutuality in pastoral care and counseling, extending from residents to their families, and the staff who care for them. Included are ongoing pastoral support, hospital visits, group leadership, public worship, pastoral administration, and crisis intervention.
The Goodwin House CPE program is the only CPE site in Northern Virginia. Goodwin House began CPE in 1998 as a satellite of Asbury Methodist Village providing Summer Intensive and Fall and Spring Extended Units.
